What is a navigation app for pilots?

A navigation app for pilots is an application that displays your GPS position on an aeronautical chart and enriches it with the data applicable in the airspace: airspaces including classification and altitude limits, airfields with frequencies, navigation facilities, reporting points, and current notices (NOTAMs).

The technical term for this is EFB, Electronic Flight Bag. This refers to the digital replacement for the paper briefcase: chart, approach plates, logbook, weather. A navigation app is the core of it.

Important for classification: Such an app is an aid. It replaces neither the required flight preparation nor official documents nor certified collision warning. You are responsible for navigation; the app only makes you faster and more attentive.

Why aren't Google Maps or a hiking GPS sufficient?

Because the air is simply missing there. A consumer GPS knows roads, houses, and contour lines, but not a single piece of information that is legally or safety-relevant for flight.

Specifically, four crucial things are missing:

  1. Airspaces. Google Maps won't show you that at 2,000 ft above that field, you are already in a control zone. The field looks identical on both maps; only one of them knows what lies above it.
  2. Currency according to aviation rules. Road maps are updated when someone has time. Aviation data follows the AIRAC cycleAIRAC cycle: every 28 days, globally synchronized, with a fixed effective date. A restricted area (in Germany "ED-R") that becomes active on the effective date must be on the chart on that date, or your chart is wrong.
  3. Vertical dimension. Flying is three-dimensional. An airspace is not an area, but a volume with lower and upper limits. A flat map cannot represent this.
  4. Aviation semantics. Frequency, runway direction, traffic pattern altitude, reporting point, navaid identifier—these are not "Points of Interest" but data with defined meaning.

The official sources for this are nationally regulated: in Germany, the DFS via the AIP, in Austria Austro Control, in Switzerland Skyguide. The regulatory framework comes from EASA and ICAO. A pilot app is essentially an attempt to bring exactly this world to the tablet.

What aviation data must a pilot app have?

How current must the data be?

As current as the AIRAC cycle: every 28 days. This is not a comfort issue, but the rhythm in which aviation information changes worldwide: new airspaces, changed frequencies, adjusted restricted areas.

Check two things with every app:

  1. Do updates come automatically? Or do you have to remember?
  2. Does it require an app update? Then you're tied to the App Store release cycle instead of the AIRAC cycle.

  • Declutter the chart. Use the altitude filter. What is 8,000 ft above you doesn't need to be visible on your chart if you're flying at 3,500 ft.
  • Load before the flight, not during. Network in the cockpit is a matter of luck.

  • Question data. If something seems strange to you, the official source is the truth in case of doubt, not the app.

Common mistakes

  • Choosing the app based on its appearance. Nice chart, thin database – you only notice it at the crucial moment.
  • Forgetting offline download. The most common mistake of all, and the most annoying.
  • Relying on live traffic. ADS-B/FLARM from the internet is a bonus for situational awareness, not a certified collision warning. Looking outside remains mandatory.
  • Relying on the traffic pattern in the app without reading the chart. Digital traffic patterns are an aid; the official visual approach chart applies.
  • Ignoring AIRAC. An app with outdated data is more dangerous than no app at all, because it feigns safety.

An honest note about ourselves: We host our basemap ourselves (Protomaps-PMTiles across 25 European countries, from our own infrastructure instead of a map provider). This is a conscious effort, but precisely why the map works completely offline, without any third party needing to be reachable during the flight.

Who built this. EuroPilot Connect originated from the Sport- und Segelfliegerclub Bad Waldsee-Reute , based at EDMZ, 660 meters of grass, runway 14/32, not on the drawing board of a software company. The runway positions are not all equally good, and we state that: 2.421 are derived from official threshold coordinates, 1.609 are measured from aerial images, 347 are computationally constructed. The inventory itself, i.e., which runway exists with which identifier and length, comes consistently from KEYVAN Aviation.

Where our aeronautical data comes from

The data set primarily comes from KEYVAN Aviation via a commercial ARINC-424 license, supplemented by openAIP and open flightmaps. KEYVAN is one of eight eight companies that hold a certificate for data services (DAT) in the EASA list of approved ATM/ANS organizations ; the list is current as of September 4, 2026, KEYVAN's certificate is EASA.AOA.DAT.033 as Type 1. According to KEYVAN, they evaluate AIP, AIC and NOTAM from 195 countries, cover over 32,000 aerodromes and 42,000 runways, and deliver in ARINC-424 format in AIRAC rhythm.

Does an app replace the official ICAO chart? No. What must be legally carried and used is regulated by the respective national regulation. The app is a tool for your situational awareness.
